Why do you need your own car in Rawai?

Rawai and neighbouring Nai Harn are all about villas scattered across the hills, the famous fish market and the piers where boats set off to Koh Bon and Coral Island. Everything is spread out, public transport is almost non-existent, and taxis have to be booked in advance. For a long stay in Rawai, a car is a basic necessity.

We'll deliver your car straight to your villa or hotel in Rawai and Nai Harn. Special rates apply for longer periods: this is the district where guests most often rent a car for a month or more. Every car is insured, and support is available around the clock. Rawai is the longest transfer on the island from the airport, about 75 minutes, which is why cars here are usually booked with delivery to the villa.

Where can you park in Rawai, and what are the roads like?

Rawai stretches along the Wiset Road seafront: there are free bays by the fish market and the pier, and cafés and shops have their own parking. The challenge is not parking but the approaches to the villas: the hills between Rawai and Nai Harn are steep, and some of the lanes are narrow and unlit. An automatic with decent ground clearance handles it easily, but in the rainy season a crossover is the better choice. The nearest beaches with parking are Nai Harn and Kata; what the kerb markings mean and where you must not stop is in our parking guide.

  • Free parking by the pier and the fish market
  • Hillside villa approaches: a crossover is easier
  • Chalong Circle is 10 minutes away

FAQ

What do people ask about car rental in Rawai?

Is it worth renting a car long-term in Rawai?

+
Yes: in Rawai a monthly car rental is the norm. Villas are scattered over the hills towards Nai Harn, public transport is almost non-existent, and a month of taxis to the supermarket, Kata or Chalong costs about as much as a rental. Longer terms mean lower daily rates: 8% off from 7 days, 29% from 22. The calculator reprices by date, and a manager on Telegram or WhatsApp can suggest a fuel-efficient model.

Will you deliver a car to my villa in Rawai?

+
Yes, delivery to a villa, house or hotel in Rawai costs ฿700. Cars go to Wiset Road on the seafront, to hillside homes towards Nai Harn and Promthep, and to complexes by the lake. Send your location or complex name by messenger: the driver comes at the agreed time with the contract, and you photograph the car together. Return it at the villa, at the airport or elsewhere on the island.

How long does it take to drive from Rawai to the airport?

+
About an hour: HKT airport is roughly 45–50 km from Rawai along Route 402 via Chalong and Thalang, up to 90 minutes at rush hour or in high season. A taxi that far is one of the priciest rides on the island, so collect the car at the airport instead: a manager meets you with a name sign in arrivals and the contract is signed on the spot. You can drop the car there before your flight at any hour.

How much does car rental in Rawai cost?

+
From ฿1,180 a day for a compact automatic such as a Toyota Yaris, Honda Jazz or Mazda 2, or from ฿1,090 a day for a week or more. Rawai has the same price list as the rest of Phuket: the price depends on class, rental length and insurance. Sedans, crossovers and minivans cost more. Delivery to your accommodation is ฿700. The calculator shows the total for your dates before booking.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Rawai?

+
A national licence and passport are enough for handover. Thai law requires an IDP plus your national licence, or a Thai licence; without an IDP the insurer may refuse to pay after an accident. Your original passport stays with you; a copy is enough for the contract. Drivers must be 21+ with a year of experience. The contract is signed right at your villa in Rawai.

Do I need a deposit for a long-term rental in Rawai?

+
No, if you take full insurance: no deposit with full insurance from 7 days. For a monthly rental it is the most common choice in Rawai, with no large sum frozen. With basic insurance you leave a refundable deposit that depends on the car class and is shown in the calculator; the excess is ฿5,000. The deposit is returned after inspection at drop-off. Passports are never held as a deposit.

How can I pay for the rental in Rawai?

+
On collection: cash in Thai baht, US dollars or euros at the exchange-office rate, or by card via the terminal with a 7% bank fee. No prepayment is needed: the manager reserves the car for your dates and you pay at your villa in Rawai. The calculator total is what you pay. A deposit, if your plan has one, is paid separately and returned at drop-off. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before handover.

What should I do after an accident or breakdown in Rawai?

+
Call the 24/7 number in your contract or write on Telegram or WhatsApp: support will explain the steps and help with the police and insurer. After an accident, don't move the cars before the report, and photograph the damage and the whole scene. For a serious breakdown, help or a replacement car is arranged. Rawai tip: use a low gear on the steep descents to the villas so the brakes don't overheat, and slow down in rain.

How full is the fuel tank when I collect the car in Rawai?

+
Full: the rule is full-to-full, so you pay only for the fuel you use. The level is recorded at handover; top up at any station before returning. Rawai has stations on Wiset Road, on the road to Chalong and towards Nai Harn, plus large PTT and Shell stations on the highway to Phuket Town. An attendant fills up; the grade is in the contract and on the filler flap, usually Gasohol 95 or 91.

Are child seats available in Rawai?

+
Yes, a child seat or booster is ฿100 a day, up to two per car, and a phone holder is free. Give the child's age and weight when booking so the right seat is brought and fitted at your villa in Rawai. The roads between Rawai, Nai Harn and Promthep are hilly with steep descents, and Thai rules require a restraint for small children. With a pushchair, a crossover or minivan is easier.

Can I drive to the Rawai fish market and piers?

+
Yes, the seafront fish market has free parking bays: pick your seafood and a café next door will cook it. Boats to Koh Bon, Racha and Coral Island leave from Rawai pier: park in the morning, pick the car up in the evening, no per-person transfer. Chalong pier, with speedboats to Phi Phi, is ten minutes away. The same road leads to Promthep for sunset and to Ya Nui beach, which no public transport reaches.

Where can I park in Rawai?

+
Wiset Road along the seafront has free bays, the fish market and pier have a large open car park, and cafés and shops usually have their own spaces. Nai Harn beach and the lake have car parks that fill up by sunset in high season. Kerbs: red and white means no stopping, yellow and white no parking, plain grey parking allowed. On narrow villa lanes, don't leave the car by the road and block the way.

Which car class should you choose in Phuket?

Pick the class that fits your trip: an SUV for the hills and long routes, a minivan for a group, an economical sedan for town.
