What counts as economy class, and who is it for?
Economy on Phuket means compact hatchbacks and small sedans: the Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris Ativ, Honda City and MG 5. Prices start at ฿1,180 a day, or roughly ฿1,090 a day on the weekly rate. Every car is automatic and air-conditioned.
Such a car covers most holiday trips: the west-coast beaches, restaurants in the next district, the supermarket, the airport. It saves fuel, parks easily in the narrow streets of Patong and the Old Town, and on the island’s smooth main roads it is hardly different from pricier classes.

What else does economy class save on, besides the daily rate?
Fuel and rental length. A compact engine uses little, and the long-rental discount lowers the rate: −8% from 7 days, −15% from 11 and −22% from 16 days. A week in a compact often costs less than a few days of taxis.

Where is a compact better than a big car?
In Patong, Phuket Town and the coastal streets of Karon: in high season they are jammed and parking spaces are tight. A small car turns where an SUV has to find a detour and fits in half a space. The boot takes two airport suitcases, and the air conditioning copes with the heat as well as in bigger classes.

When is it worth paying for a higher class?
When four of you travel with suitcases, often climb to mountain viewpoints fully loaded or plan long trips to Phang Nga and Krabi, a crossover is more comfortable. A group of five or more needs a minivan. Otherwise paying for a higher class adds little comfort.

How much does fuel cost with an economy rental?

Less than with any non-hybrid class: a compact engine uses little, and on a normal holiday routine a full tank lasts several days. Most cars in the class take Gasohol 95; the grade is stated in the contract. Fuel works on a full-to-full basis: the car is handed over with a full tank and returned the same way, so you only pay for what you use.
Is a deposit required for an economy car?

No, if you take full insurance: it is sold on rentals of 7 days or more and removes both the deposit and the excess. Basic insurance with a ฿5,000 excess is included in the price; with it you leave a refundable deposit of ฿5,000–6,000 for this class; the exact amount is on the car page and known before you sign. It is returned in full if the car comes back without new damage: the condition is photographed at handover and return.
Can I collect a budget car straight from the airport?

Yes, the car class does not affect delivery: a compact is brought to HKT airport free of charge for any rental length. The inspection and contract are done on the spot.
