In short

  • A child seat or booster at MonkeyCar costs ฿100 a day each, up to two per car; you add them as an option when booking.
  • Since 2022, Thai law has required children under 6 to travel in a child restraint, with a fine of up to ฿2,000.
  • Under one year an infant carrier, up to about 4 or 5 a child seat with its own harness, then a booster.
  • The phone holder at MonkeyCar is free.

What does Thai law require?

Since 2022, Thai law has required children under 6 to travel in a restraint suited to their age and weight: an infant carrier for babies, a child seat for toddlers, a booster for older children. A child on an adult's lap or unrestrained on the back seat is an offence, with a fine of up to ฿2,000. Other rules and fines are in the driver's guide.

Children aged 6 to 9 who have outgrown a child seat need a booster. Phuket's roads are hilly, with sharp bends and descents, and the seat holds the child under hard braking on any trip, however short.

Which seat does a child need by age?

The age bands are approximate, so give the child's age, weight and height when booking. A booster raises the child so the car's own belt crosses the shoulder and hips; without it the belt sits across the neck and stomach.

How do you order a child seat with the car at MonkeyCar?

You choose the seat and booster in the calculator when booking the car: ฿100 a day each, up to two per car. Give each child's age, weight and height, which decide the type of restraint. We confirm the seat together with the car booking.

With three children, message the manager before booking. The phone holder at MonkeyCar is free: holding a phone while driving is illegal in Thailand.

  • Give the child's age, weight and height when booking
  • Seats and boosters cost ฿100 a day each, up to two per car
  • For a third child, discuss space with the manager before booking

How do you check the seat is fitted correctly?

Check the fitting when you collect the car: the seat should not move more than a couple of centimetres, and the straps should sit snugly. The seat is held by ISOFIX or by the car's seat belt. If anything looks wrong, ask the staff member handing over the car for help or message the manager.

In an open car park the buckles and metal parts of the seat get very hot. Cover the seat with a towel and air out the cabin before the child gets in.

Which car fits two or three child seats?

Two child seats in a compact take up almost the whole rear bench, leaving a narrow strip for a third adult. Three seats in a row do not fit in every car: for that setup go straight for a minivan with a third row.

A family with one child and normal luggage will manage with a sedan or a crossover: the pushchair and suitcases fit in the boot, and the crossover's higher seat makes the child seat easier to fit and remove. On the hilly roads of the west and south (Patong, Kamala, Surin, Nai Harn) a car with power in reserve climbs better fully loaded. Choosing a class for a family is covered in Phuket with kids by car.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I bring a child seat from home?

+
You do not have to: from the rental company a seat or booster costs ฿100 a day. That way the seat takes no luggage space and cannot be damaged on the flight. If your child prefers their own, bring it and fit it in the rental car.

Do taxis and Grab have child seats?

+
Usually not: the car turns up as it is, and the child has to ride on your lap. The law does not allow that, and on a winding road it is dangerous. In a rental car the seat stays for the whole rental, so every trip with the child is legal. Taxis and renting are compared in taxi or car rental.

Can I drive without a child seat for a short distance?

+
No. The law applies to every trip, and hard braking happens on a five-minute drive to the beach too. The fine for a child without a seat is up to ฿2,000, and it is issued at an ordinary checkpoint stop.

What if my child needs a different type of seat during the rental?

+
Message the manager on Telegram or WhatsApp with the child's new age and weight. They will tell you which restraint fits and when it can be brought.

How much do child seats cost for the whole trip?

+
Each seat or booster costs ฿100 a day, multiplied by the number of rental days, and the total shows in the calculator before booking together with the car price and delivery. There is no prepayment: you pay for the seat with the rental when you collect the car.
