Do you need a car in Patong?

Patong is compact, but its walkable center is ringed by hills, and the neighboring beaches (Freedom, Paradise and Tri Trang) are reachable only on wheels. Taxis and tuk-tuks in Patong have long been among the priciest on the island: a single ride to Karon can cost more than a full day of rental. Your own car pays for itself by the second or third trip.

MonkeyCar brings the car straight to your hotel or apartment in Patong: on Bangla Road, along the beach or in the Kalim area. Paperwork takes 10 minutes (your licence, passport, the contract), and then you're behind the wheel. The manager will point you to parking, too: the municipal lots along Beach Road and the covered Jungceylon garage. Landing at night? It is easier to collect the car right at the airport and take the direct route to Patong in 45 minutes.

FAQ

What do people ask about car rental in Patong?

How much does it cost to rent a car in Patong?

+
From ฿1,180 a day, the price of the cheapest car in the fleet, the Honda Jazz. Other models, from hatchbacks to seven-seat minivans, cost more. The total depends on class, dates, insurance and hotel delivery, and the calculator shows the full amount before you book. From 7 days the daily rate drops by 8%. If you drive every day, a car in Patong usually costs less than taxis and tuk-tuks.

Can the car be delivered to my hotel in Patong?

+
Yes, hotel delivery in Patong costs ฿600, anywhere from Kalim in the north to Tri Trang in the south, including Beach Road, Bangla Road and the streets around Jungceylon. The car arrives at the agreed time, night-time included. On the spot you inspect it together, record its condition in photos and sign the contract. You can return it in Patong, at HKT airport or in another area by arrangement.

Where can I park in Patong?

+
The safest options are your hotel's car park or the multi-storey garage at Jungceylon mall: the car stays in the shade, and Bangla Road and the beach are a short walk away. Beach Road has municipal spaces, some of them paid. Watch the kerb: red-and-white means no stopping, yellow-and-black means no parking. Police in Patong fine and tow, so in high season look for a spot early in the evening.

Is a deposit required to rent in Patong?

+
Not with full insurance: renting in Patong with no deposit is possible with full insurance from 7 days. For shorter rentals or without it, a refundable cash deposit is paid at pickup; the amount depends on the car class and is shown before booking. It is returned right after the return inspection. MonkeyCar never keeps your passport as security.

What documents do I need to rent?

+
Your passport and a valid driving licence are enough to collect the car in Patong. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required at handover but is strongly recommended: without it, police checkpoints issue fines, and full insurance may not apply after an accident. Get it at home and carry it with your licence. Drivers must be 21 or older with at least a year of experience; a second driver goes on the contract, ideally with an IDP too.

What does the insurance cover?

+
If you follow the rules, damage to the car you cause costs you no more than the ฿5,000 excess. Full insurance (35% of the rental, at least ฿3,000, from 7 days) removes both the excess and the deposit. Tyres and rims, the interior and lost keys are not covered. Full insurance is void for drink or drug driving, driving without an IDP or leaving the scene of an accident. Full terms are in the contract.

How do I pay for the rental in Patong?

+
At pickup: cash in Thai baht, US dollars or euros at the exchange-office rate, or by card via the terminal with a 7% bank fee. No prepayment is needed: the manager confirms the booking and you pay for your rental in Patong on the spot. A deposit, if your plan includes one, is paid separately and returned when you hand the car back. Patong has exchange booths along Beach Road and near Jungceylon, usually with better rates than the airport.

How long is the drive from the airport to Patong?

+
36 km and 45–60 minutes. The highway from HKT airport is wide, the winding stretch starts closer to Patong, and at rush hour and in high season the drive takes longer. You can collect the car right at the airport, where pickup is free, and drive straight to your hotel; after a night flight that is more convenient.

How full is the fuel tank when I get the car?

+
Full, and it goes back full too, so you pay only for the fuel you use. The fuel level is recorded at handover. Before returning it, fill up at the PTT, Shell or Caltex stations on the way out of Patong towards Karon or Phuket Town. Attendants fill up for you: just name the fuel grade from the contract, usually Gasohol 91 or 95.

Are child seats available?

+
Yes: a child seat or booster costs ฿100 per day, up to two per car, and a phone holder is free. When booking, give the child's age and weight so the right seat is prepared; it is fitted at handover in Patong. Large families can take a seven-seat minivan.

Are there discounts for long-term rentals?

+
Yes, length-of-stay discounts apply automatically: −8% from 7 days, −15% from 11 days and −22% from 16 days, the tier that covers a monthly rental. Enter your dates and the calculator shows the final price. If you are wintering in Patong or working remotely, booking the car for the whole stay at once works out cheaper.

Can I drive from Patong to the quiet beaches?

+
Yes, that is the main reason people rent a car in Patong. Freedom Beach is 10–15 minutes away: you leave the car at the top and walk down a trail or take a boat. Paradise Beach and quiet Tri Trang lie just to the south. Head north for Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao with their beach clubs. A return taxi there often costs almost as much as a day's rental, and with a car you set the timetable.

Which car class should you choose in Phuket?

Pick the class that fits your trip: an SUV for the hills and long routes, a minivan for a group, an economical sedan for town.
