Phuket with Kids by Car: Which Car to Take and Where to Go?
Phuket with kids by car is easier than by taxi: taxis and Grab rarely have child seats, and the shallow beaches, the water park and the aquarium are at different ends of the island. At MonkeyCar a child seat or booster is an option for ฿100 a day, and you can collect the car right at HKT airport with no pickup charge.
In short
- A child seat or booster costs ฿100 a day each, up to two per car; taxis and Grab rarely have them.
- A family with one or two children and a pushchair fits a crossover; two families or three generations fit one 7–8-seat minivan.
- The calm beaches for children are in the north: Bang Tao, Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao, with the Splash Jungle water park nearby.
- Pickup and return at HKT airport cost ฿0, so after the flight there is no taxi ride with children and suitcases.
Why are taxis awkward with kids in Phuket?
Thai taxis and Grab rarely carry child seats: the car turns up as it is. Holding a small child on your lap on a mountain road is dangerous, and the law does not allow it.
A family day is a string of short trips: the beach before the heat, lunch, a hotel nap, dinner or a sunset viewpoint in the evening. By taxi every one of those means waiting in the sun and a separate fare. Your own car sits at the hotel with the pushchair and water inside, and you can leave whenever the child is tired or it starts to rain.

A family with kids and luggage needs room to spare: minivans with seven seats or more, with child seats and boosters as a calculator option.
Minivans for FamiliesWhich car should a family with kids take?
Choose the car by the number of child seats and suitcases. Child seats take up the width of the rear bench: two of them in a compact leave a narrow strip for a third adult. The third row and the luggage share the same space, and no car in the fleet takes seven passengers and seven suitcases at once. All MonkeyCar cars are automatic and air-conditioned.
A typical two-week trip with two children: land at HKT, a hotel in Bang Tao or Karon, short beach runs and two or three longer days out. Most families take a crossover for it: the seat is higher, and the tailgate opens the whole load area. The Toyota Veloz and Mitsubishi Xpander work as seven-seat minivans, and the Toyota Alphard and Majesty are chosen for comfort on longer drives. Tell the manager who is travelling before you book.
| Who is travelling | Class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two adults and an infant, little luggage | Sedan | Uses less fuel, easier to park |
| A family with one or two children and a pushchair | Crossover | Higher seat, pushchair and suitcases fit in the boot |
| Two families or three generations | Minivan with 7–8 seats | Everyone rides together, cheaper than two cars |
| A large family with luggage | Hyundai H1 | The biggest boot |
What about child seats?
Since 2022, Thai law has required children under 6 to travel in a child restraint, with a fine of up to ฿2,000. At MonkeyCar a child seat or booster is an option when you book: ฿100 a day each, up to two per car, and the amount shows in the calculator. Give each child's age and weight so the right type can be matched.
With three children, message the manager in advance: three seats in a row do not fit in every car, and for that setup go straight for a minivan with a third row. How to choose a seat by age and check the fitting is covered in child seats for rental cars.
Where can you go with kids by car?
Family spots are spread across the island and public transport does not reach them, which is why a car pays for itself fastest on family trips. Swimming with small children is calmer in the north: Patong and Karon can have noticeable waves and a sudden drop-off.
For a day with children under 5 or 6, plan one big activity and a quiet lunch nearby. Combine two places only if they are close, such as Splash Jungle and Mai Khao beach. Families also go to the Andamanda water park and the Soi Dog rescue centre. Ready-made day trips are in driving routes around Phuket.
| Place | Where | Why it suits children |
|---|---|---|
| Bang Tao beach | Bang Tao, north | Gently sloping sandy bottom, facilities nearby |
| Nai Thon beach | Nai Thon, north | Shallow clear water, quiet |
| Nai Yang and Mai Khao beaches | Mai Khao, near the airport | Shallow water, shade, few people |
| Splash Jungle water park | North, near Mai Khao | A children's zone with a shallow pool, slides for school-age kids |
| Phuket Aquarium | Cape Panwa | A calm visit of 1.5 to 2 hours, good on a rainy day |
| Elephant sanctuary | Near Phuket Town | No elephant rides: visitors feed and watch them |
| Old Town | Phuket Town | A walk for a rainy day |
How do you plan a day in the car with a child?
The cabin gets very hot in the sun: open the doors for a minute before the child gets in, and only then turn the air conditioning to full. The seat's metal parts and buckles heat up too, so cover the seat with a towel when parking in the open. Keep water, wet wipes and a spare T-shirt in the car, and take snacks on longer drives so you do not have to stop for food.
For the first half hour behind the wheel, left-hand traffic takes your full attention, so keep the first drive with the kids short and outside rush hour, and plan longer trips for the morning while it is cooler. With children, allow extra time for stops. Local rules and fines are in the driver's guide.
