Car Hire in Phuket in High Season and over New Year: Prices and When to Book
Car hire in Phuket in high season (January 11 to March 31 and December 15 to December 24) costs 60% more than the base rate, and over New Year, in peak season (December 25 to January 10), 85% more. For those dates it is best to book one to two months ahead: there is no prepayment, so an early booking costs nothing until you collect the car.
In short
- High season (January 11 to March 31 and December 15 to December 24) adds +60% to the rate; peak season over New Year (December 25 to January 10) adds +85%.
- For New Year dates book one to two months ahead; for ordinary high-season dates two to three weeks is enough.
- No prepayment, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.
- The long-rental discount applies in season too: −8% from 7 days, −15% from 11, −22% from 16.
When is high season in Phuket, by the weather and by the price list?
Weather-wise the dry season runs roughly from November to March, with the most visitors from mid-December to the end of February. There is almost no rain, and the sea on the west coast (Patong, Karon, Kata and Bang Tao) is calm and fine for swimming with children.
The MonkeyCar surcharge follows its own dates and is charged for each day. If a rental spans two seasons, only the days in the dearer one cost more. There are no holiday surcharges on top of the seasonal ones.

Car Catalogue with Prices for Your DatesWhat does a car cost in each season?
An economy car costs from ฿1,180 a day for the nearest dates; for high and peak season dates the surcharge from the table is added. The long-rental discount applies in any season. How the whole total adds up is covered in how much car rental in Phuket costs.
| Season | Price-list dates | Surcharge on the rate | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | May 16 to September 30 | none | rain is usually short and in the afternoon, cheaper accommodation |
| Middle | April 1 to May 15 and October 1 to December 14 | +25% | rain is rare by November, Songkran in April |
| High | January 11 to March 31 and December 15 to December 24 | +60% | dry, calm sea, busier roads |
| Peak | December 25 to January 10 | +85% | the New Year weeks, the highest demand |
How far ahead should I book a car for New Year?
For New Year dates, book one to two months ahead, so in November or early December. For ordinary high-season dates two to three weeks is enough. Economy cars and minivans for large families go first, and by late December the cars still free on specific dates are often dearer than planned.
A booking needs no prepayment: you choose a model and dates, if the car is free, we confirm the booking straight away, and you pay at pickup. If your plans change, you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup. Add your flight number straight away so an airport handover is easier to arrange.
How can I save on car hire in high season?
The main lever is the rental length. One booking for the whole trip costs less than several short ones, and the discount from 7 days partly offsets the seasonal surcharge. Pickup and return at HKT airport are free in any season, so it pays to collect the car on arrival. If you are on the island for a month or more, see the one- and three-month estimate and the article on a car for the winter.
- From 7 days: −8%; from 11: −15%; from 16: −22%
- Pickup and return at HKT airport: ฿0
- Low-season dates (May 16 to September 30): no surcharge
- Full insurance from 7 days: no deposit
What changes on the roads and in parking at the height of the season?
The narrow streets of Patong jam in the evening, spaces along Karon and Kata beaches are hard to find, and Route 402 towards the airport can be congested in the morning. Allow extra time, especially before a flight.
Set off early: viewpoints such as Promthep Cape and Karon Viewpoint fill up by sunset, and parking near popular beaches gets hard after ten in the morning. Where you can leave the car is explained in the article on kerb markings.
- Extra time for the drive to the airport
- Beach parking: before 9–10 am or after 4 pm
- For a night in Patong's bars, leave the car and take a taxi
How much does a week cost in high and peak season on the market?
The table compares the same week at the market and at MonkeyCar: economy class, 7 days with pickup at the airport, the same dates in each season. The market is the public offers on the Localrent aggregator for the same models MonkeyCar has in its fleet; the site refreshes this snapshot once a week.
The peak-season window in the snapshot is the first week after it begins. "Middle half of offers" is the range that holds the middle half of market prices, leaving out the cheapest and the most expensive cars. The MonkeyCar price comes from the same calculator as the booking form: with the 7-day discount, no extras and no district delivery.
| Season and week | Market, median per day | Market, middle half of offers | MonkeyCar, median per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Season, May 16–23, 2027 | ฿960 | ฿892–1,142 | ฿870 |
| Middle Season, November 3–10, 2026 | ฿1,215 | ฿1,050–1,392 | ฿1,080 |
| High Season, December 15–22, 2026 | ฿1,536 | ฿1,320–1,701 | ฿1,390 |
| Peak Season, December 25 – January 1, 2027 | ฿1,806 | ฿1,543–1,950 | ฿1,600 |
