Is one day enough, or do you need to stay overnight?

A day trip is doable: 6–7 hours of driving there and back plus 4–5 hours on site. That is enough for Ao Nang, the viewpoints and lunch by the sea if you leave by 7 am and are back by 9 pm.

Railay and the islands need an overnight stay: boat outings take half a day, and without one the trip becomes a race. Ao Nang has hotels for every budget, and many have their own parking; check when booking.

How far into Krabi can the car go?

You cannot drive to Railay Beach: the peninsula is cut off by cliffs, and only boats from Ao Nang go there, all day and less often in the evening. The car stays in the car park by the promenade. On the other hand, a car reaches the quiet beaches of Klong Muang and Tubkaek north of Ao Nang, which tours skip.

Dirt tracks lead to the mangrove channels of Ao Thalane and to the viewpoints, so a crossover suits them better. Where to leave the car at a pier before an island trip is covered in the article on ferries from Phuket.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to tell the rental company about a trip to Krabi?

+
No, the MonkeyCar contract allows driving in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces, and the insurance is valid there too. Approval is needed only for going beyond these provinces, for example to Samui and Phangan (how to drive there), as set out in the rental terms. Before a long route you can message the manager, who will tell you about road conditions and good places to stop.

Is the road from Phuket to Krabi difficult?

+
No, Highway 4 is smooth with clear markings and no switchbacks on the route. The bottleneck is the Sarasin Bridge at weekends and holidays, where traffic jams happen. Otherwise the road is easier than many stretches on Phuket itself.

Which car should I take to Krabi?

+
Any car from the MonkeyCar fleet will manage Highway 4. For a group with luggage a crossover or minivan is more comfortable, and for the viewpoints and the Ao Thalane channels on dirt tracks a crossover is the better choice. If Krabi is part of a trip of a week or longer, the daily rate is lower: from 7 days a duration discount applies, see weekly rental.

Is there a toll on the Sarasin Bridge?

+
No, crossing the Sarasin Bridge is free. On the way you will pay for petrol, parking and the boat to Railay, so keep some baht in cash.

What if the car breaks down on the way to Krabi?

+
Stop somewhere safe and message the MonkeyCar manager on Telegram or WhatsApp; support is available around the clock. If the fault is not the customer's, the rental terms provide for a replacement car. What to do step by step is covered in the article on a rental car breakdown.
